Is insanity an illness or is it just the collective term for mental illnesses?

Insanity is not even a medical reference. I guess you could look at insanity as a "slang" word, for mentally ill, other than that it is only used in the judicial system. In a sense you are right for a collective term, but technically it is considered incorrect, hense "slang".
